TWG025| barbeque - transient portals

Today TWG closes it's doors. Seeing us off, piggy legend barbeque is releasing his latest with us, a mesh of chilled footwork, tinges of acid and a whole lot of ambient leanings; a release as kinetically moving as it is emotionally so.

Featuring chilled vaporware-by-R&B footwork cuts like 'c-a n..a d..i a_n __d..r..u-g s_t-o-r e-', sampled vox-heavy tracks like the near vocaloid 'i want to hold u but i can't', and pieces more in line with his older output ('indie.fuckboy'), 'transient portals' is eight tracks of eclectic perfection, taking a single overarching genre and fucking it every way possible. 'transient portals' takes barbeque's recorded outputs to a new level, being easily his most condensed and realised release to date, ambition realised.

We couldn't be more happy at TWG HQ to be closing on a release so strong, so in line with what were about and so well crafted. And so, with a mixture of sadness and content, we say goodbye. Thanks to everyone for listening, reading and engaging with TWG over the years ( a bigger thanks to artists is forthcoming ). The Bandcamp and Blog will remain live indefinitely so don't worry about losing releases or w/e, PEACE ~ x

TWG023| MrWimmer - An Interesting Life

With the end of TWG less than a month away, we're starting to get a little teary-eyed over here. Here to wallow with us in abject melancholy, MrWimmer is finally releasing a follow up to 'Once More Unto The Breach' with us here.

And what a follow up it is. The six tracks that make up An Interesting Life seethe with emotion from the beginning glissandos of 'Golden' all the way through to the final croons of the title track. Mixing vocals, live instrumentation and LSDJ mastery into brooding jazz-rock, MrWimmer has struck the balances between these elements perfectly, crafting a stunningly unique sound that carries the album into another stratosphere when attempting to weigh it against what else is available at the moment.

The music compliments the pining, lovesick lyrics, as much as does the sound design used throughout. From the thick sludge drudge of guitars in the desperate 'Your Way', to the euphoric synth solos of 'Study' and the driving drumwork of 'How Long', every minuscule aspect of An Interesting Life has been throught over and perfected, and the result is truly remarkable.

One of the most original, well-crafted and emotional releases in chiptune ever, we're ecstatic to be releasing this here on TWG ~ ! ~

TWG022| ocean palace - UN PEACE SUMMIT

With our closure imminent, TWG thought it was high time we stuck out a release by one of our favourite masters of subtly, dissonance, and lo-fi emotion; ocean palace is bringing his incredible talents in this twelve track opus UN PEACE SUMMIT

Tonal poetics seen in 'kingdoms of madness', 'ur cute', and 'love and solitude' play alongside the frantic dissonant beauty of 'a lucid surge of light', 'creating gem quality stones in a wood stove', and 'an ocean of glass and starlight', forming a cohesive and multifaceted exploration of lo-fi melody.

Ukulele samples by Hunter Irving in 'so i married a slime' and drum contributions on 'creating...' and 'a lucid...' by ex-TWGer Guardia (not to mention full compositions by other artists re-arranged by ocean palace) give UN PEACE SUMMIT another layer of depth and range to the already diverse set of sounds. The production is minimal too, taken directly from source the understated meanderings of track speak from themselves slowly, giving the album a sense of growing over frequent re-listens across both the ambient and the jazz influenced tracks alike.

Enough hyperbole; some of the best lo-fi and affective chip in the scene. We're very very happy to be putting this out! PS, download comes with two bonus tracks!

TWG021| Spaceman Fantastiques - C.O.M.P.A.S.S

Nearly three years in the making, TWG is overly estatic to finally be bringing this huge album by Spaceman Fantastiques to you as part of our final string of releases.

Almost instantenously it's clear the long writing and recording progress was not wasted; full band progressive rock with math rock tinges flood over 'SW', hauntingly pretty electronic interludes like 'WSW' act as tonal poems, and tracks like the multi-movement 'N' rock through a plethora of ideas with the ease of a compositional wizard, emotional and breathtaking simultaneously.

Whilst lodged almost in sweeping progressive rock grandoise, 'C.O.M.P.A.S.S' ducks and dives between hundreds of influences, hitting each with intent and reasoning, a patchwork of complex but reasoned diversity that, when pulled back from, reveals a deep and diverse tapestry of music. Quite possibly one of the largest, in both scope and ambition, releases the scene will have seen in years, and certainly the biggest to ever be hosted here on TWG. From the piano, choral voices and pulsing bass medley of 'NE', through the noise-laden and immedate 'SE' and the squealing-solos-into-restrained-crawl of 'W', the journey within 'C.O.M.P.A.S.S' is laden with incredible moments.

TWG020| Whitely - सन लाइफ मौत

TWG has always prided itself in its genre diversity. With the fourth in our line of final releases, Whitely brings us what is easily his most surprising and one of his best realised pieces yet. Indian influenced ambient music, with ethereal vocals provided by Whitely himself, thick in atmosphere, emotion and tension.

There is not much else that can be said about this release, other than it's Whitely as you've never heard him before, a listening experience that is an experience as much as it is a journey, and that we're incredibly proud to have this here on TWG. Not necessarily chiptune, but incredible all the same.

TWG019| HODSON - Colours That Glow In The Dark

Number three of the finals sees the release debut of 'Manchester's Top Geeza' HODSON, of ex-Skin Walker fame, flexing his musical muscles under the weight of this titanic mixture of spoken word, dnb, glitch and trip hop.

Dispelling specific genre focus in favour of atmospheric and tonal meanderings, HODSON's five track effort covers aeons of ground, self-regarded in genre terms by HODSON himself as one only named 'Particular'. Using chiptune as just one of several instruments, only adding further colour to the rich patchwork of influences on show, HODSON also adds sampled vocals and his own spoken word to weigh down tracks with an emotional vibrancy not seen often within the scene. From the delicate duality of guitar tones and big beat-esque drums in 'Pink & Blue', to the thick, suffocated dnb in 'Somewhere Down In The West' or the throbbing almost acidic bass in 'Out To Pasture', Colours That Glow In The Dark is as surprising as it is diverse, and another welcome addition to the TWG roster that we are estatic to be bringing to you.

TWG018| Vince Kaichan - Yolanda

The second of our farewell releases comes in the form of a 4 track ep from chiptune's most underrated chipjazz composer, the best Ubik artist not currently on Ubik.

Yolanda sees Vince delve into new territories, bringing to his already diverse sound a tropical and latin flare. Whilst chiptune progjazz can be accused of somtimes sounding similar, Vince's application of different styles, from the samba breakdown of 'Novaton' to the beach-laden melodies of 'Viverra', leaves his music sounding distinct, varied, and fresh. With compositional skill well beyond his years, Yolanda is a burst of 4 incredibly well constructed tracks, each packing many divergent and complimentary ideas into a relatively short running time whilst never giving up emotional content in preference of compositional complexity.

It gives us great pleasure to be able to release something from this  unique and rising talent before our closure, especially a release that is as intricate as it is emotionally delicate.

TWG017| aviel - gorilla_tears ep

The first in our final splurge of releases comes in the form of a label debut for LPGT Hip-Hop / R&B producer aviel brown, giving us a tight 5 track EP that seeps emotion in tomes.

From the opening, tear-inspiring tones of 'sony' (be careful with this song, if you're  looking at anyone whilst it plays it's likely sony's melody will make you fall in love with them), gorrila_tears rolls like liquid from speakers, a soppy emotional mesh of sampled voices, Holy Konni-esque tones and tears. From the jazzy groove and ballad tones of 'sleep_well' to the almost orchestally infulenced throes of passion seen in the title track, gorrila_tears is immensely well crafted throughout.

Mixing jazz, hip-hop and R&B in equal measures, aviel sounds both recognizable and totally unique simultaneously. Fitting into TWG's remit of emotional esotericism, making this a release we're incredibly excited to be setting off our countdown to closing. And if it's the last thing we do, aviel brown will be realised for what he is: a fucking musical genius who can push out more emotion then most.

TWG016| sleepytimejesse - ~ ̱o̅ p̬ ̔e n ̓e͒ d`͍ ͔̘᷊̙̉̍᷃͢

TWG turns two today! And to celebrate, sleepytimejesse has offered up a highly emotional, broken ambient release teeming with atmosphere, dread and serenity.

Sounding almost like soundtrack to a giallo film crossed with a haunted tape deck, Goblin via Trent Reznor, sleepytimejesse carves out an 18 minute cascade sounding more like tonal poetry than anything else in the chiptune scene today. This release also does a good job of summarising TWG's long-held mission statement: esoteric music full of emotion, the experimental and the affective glued together.

It's hard to describe a piece of work that is as much felt as it is heard, so instead, celebrate our anniversary with us by turning off the lights and the music up: it's definitely a journey worth taking. PS, your computer screen isn't broken.

TWG014| Love Through Cannibalism - Serial Experiments Tangela 2

Following the similarly titled release of 2010, TWG are very proud to be presenting the second 'Serial Experiments...' album by Spain's best glitch, Love Through Cannibalism.

Musically, the release traverses more ground than possibly any TWG before it: chipbreak dripped in dissonance, serene and glitched out melodic passages, mind-bending sample work, downtempo lurching, pure unaccommodating noise, to name but a few.  Walking the tightrope between pure genius and unlistenable garbage, Love Through Cannibalism has made a name for himself by being unrestrictive, distinct and with incredible talent, and here, on 'Serial Experiments Tangela 2', we find him reaching his apex, further forwarding TWG's propagandic push towards experimental chiptune. A release that needs to be listened to rather than glanced at to be appreciated, take some time out, draw the curtains and become infused in the pure esotericism of it all. Or he's trolling us all. TWG013| V/A - Anti-Chiptune Chiptune

At TWG, we've always pushed the odd, the weird, and the emotionally robust. In celebration of the more esoteric corners of the chiptune stratosphere we've compiled 19 tracks from some of chiptune's most notable and talented purveyors of "what?" to showcase what can be done when the term chiptune is examined. From scene veterans as prolific as Alex Mauer and inpuj's ilkae, to newer blood like Nappes and TWG staples like Guardia and Vegas Diamond. We've got the final ever Fauxhound track, +Let's Disinfect!+ covering Bit Shifter's 'Activation Theme' in a folk punk style, an Alex Mauer track written in 1997 and live NES Rom manipulation from DJ NORTON ANTIVIRUS. Plus a whole ton more. Some is unexplainable, some is not chiptune and some is not music, but we hope you enjoy this eclectic selection of oddities. ~~~~Thank you for listening to the ACCSS' message~~~~

TWG012| AutoReMi-PK - BRKN

What if Megaman soundtracks were written by Zan-Zan-Zawa-Veia? Seemingly hell-bent on finding out the answer to this, AutoReMi-PK’s TWG debut, ‘BRKN’, goes to great lengths to be a blinding mixture of experimental esotericism and melody-driven pop-esque hookery, and the evidence to his success is here in abundance.

From the epic space swoons of ‘Subroutine Traffic Stop…’ to the manic energy and dissonant beauty of ‘Dys4-1A’, every inch of ‘BRKN’ is stylistically eclectic and robust, melodically affecting and compositionally complex. Where ‘BRKN’ excels best is its ability to mix those heart-rending melodies into vigorous and rewarding compositions. The melodies of ‘Rules and Regalia…’ call into mind the heydays of Bit Shifter, ‘Requiem (Our Stolen Future)’ ends with soft but emotively poignant sweeps of motifs, and ‘We Never Sleep/Artemidorus’ moves from crunchy experimentalism into a melody that defines the term ‘tearjerker’.

‘BRKN’ is an album as well as a journey. Every track slips into the next as a continuous piece and the effect is infectious. A consistent aural and emotive assault, every turn and shift as unforgettable as the preceding, every arp brimming with emotion and every passage a piece of compositional masterpiece that ticks the boxes of both rational talent and emotive creativity. Those who have already decided their albums of the year may have been slightly pre-emptive; on his debut, AutoReMi-PK has already solidified his place as an incredibly talented composers, and ‘BRKN’ as one of the scene’s best offerings in some time.

TWG011| Vegas Diamond - Hyper

We couldn’t be more excited to release this. Vegas Diamond debuts on TWG with this, his second, more condensed, and deeperly dirty swaggering experimental hip hop. We’re hugely proud to be introducing to you, ‘Hyper’.

Trance-inducing and as thick as sludge, Vegas Diamond’s sophomore is a concise record of his great talent. These four tracks meld together aggressive groove with hypnotic melodies, tessellating around a defiant rhythm and pulsating with confident and a unique voice. From the emotive opener ‘Ion’, to the off-kilter and crunchy churn of ‘Visor’, to the vicious beats of ‘Real’ and the final, melancholic laments of ‘Cube’, every inch of ‘Hyper’ feels, simultaneously, eclectically self-contained and continuously conceptual; a constantly evolving stream of ideas.

Stylistically, ‘Hyper’ sees Vegas Diamond traversing the musical ideas of Monodeer and Nullsleep, and setting up shop somewhere in the middle. The melodies are genuinely otherworldly; atmospheric and seeping emotion, cascading over the dense textures that make the release sound so huge, and the beats hit like sledgehammers on concrete, loose but still incredibly strong.

Groove, dark affecting melodies and hypnotising composition; don’t miss out on one of the most innovative and unique LSDJ releases this year has seen.

TWG010| Gab Pearson - Free Sprite

Continuing our crusade against explainable styles and the comprehensible, we here at TWG are incredibly proud to throw this chunk of jaunty and experimental swing-laden gold at you.

Mixing inexplicably catchy phrases with hugely emotive tonal tapestries and a healthy spooning of the esoteric, Gab Pearson exudes subtle and eclectic mastery. Sounding like a jazz-fuelled romp through polka, Russia, and hip-hop, 'Free Sprite' is by no means a simple listen. From the touchingly ballad-esque bridges of 'universalizable', through to the left-turn rap of 'movezherb' and Indian percussion spread throughout 'action caption', this EP never starts to make sense, or lose an inch of its huge groove. In fact, it manages the insane feat of being both completely bonkers and touchingly emotive in one fell swoop, and all with some giant beats driving it throughout.

So without further ado, I may as well quit attempting the impossible, describing this release words, and instead implore you to listen with an open mind. You're sure to find some of the most incredibly well written and undeniably unique tracks in the scene within.

TWG009| Guardia - Imprints

We at TWG have a certain love for the experimental. So it was with the most enthusiastic of handshakes that we welcomed ‘Imprints’ and its creator, Styles Munson aka Guardia, aboard the S.S. T.W.G for an extremely versatile chunk of defining chiptune with all the markings of a scene classic.

‘Imprints’ has been three years in the making, and it really shows. Melding the progjazz meanderings of Zan-Zan-Zawa-Veia with accessible and hook laden motifs, hip-hop beats and cursory mastering of almost every genre under the sun, Guardia’s 10 track opus is full of jaw-dropping moments. From the trip-hop 5/4 swagger of ‘God Guard’ to the tropical meanderings of ‘Particu’, the driving beats of ‘Shako’ to the subtle and soft ebb of ‘Globetrotter’, every second of ‘Imprints’ is nothing short of astonishingly eclectic, emotional and ingenious.

Melding on the most part elements of pop, jazz, hip-hop, downtempo and a healthy serving of experimental thinking, Styles creates a lavish soundscape wherein every track works as a singular entity and also as a complete package; a set of tracks so strong each could individually be a single but as a whole they form a cohesive slab of vibrant, ground-breaking and breath-taking chiptune.

Stylistically unique, undeniably fresh, and magnificently ambitious, we here at TWG are incredibly proud to present what could quite possibly be the release of the year. Immerse yourself and submit~~~

TWG008| Starpilot - A Retrospective

On July 6th in 2012 TWG opened its doors with ‘Ragged Smile’ by Starpilot. Mixing elements of psychedelic rock, progressive experimentalism and post-punk, Starpilot crafted a hugely infectious mix of chiptune and indie that to this day, over a year later, still stands proud as one of the greatest releases we’ve put out. It cemented TWG’s ideals in one fell swoop; chiptune experimentalism, the new and the old entwined both through instruments and stylistically.

As such, owing the great talent for both an explosive launch title and his continued moral support, it was with a great deal of bittersweet sorrow I greeted the news he’d be moving on. Following the release of ‘Yesterday’s Tomorrow’, his final collection of new material under the Starpilot moniker, I felt a tribute should be paid to his, needless to say prolific, past. A week or two later and, upon his request, we’ve curated down nearly three years, twenty releases released by multiple labels and countless compilations into a single, 17 track solidified statement and testament to the huge talent this incredible artist holds; a small example of why so many will be sad to see his absence.

Not everyone’s favourite tracks will be present, and not every release is covered, but as a manifesto of a hugely active artist this Retrospective hopefully does him proud. For the fans already; enjoy revisiting the classics along with some more hidden stuff you may not have heard before. To the first-timers; enjoy the journey in which you’re about to embark!

Some final words from Starpilot:
"Electronic music seems to be more about creating club bangin' party music than anything else. Nothing wrong with club bangin' party music, in fact, I enjoy some of it. But it's not me. It's not where I fit in this world as a musician. I'm not saying that in terms of ‘this is better’ or ‘that is worse’, I'm looking at it in the most honest neutral objective way that I can. I'm not a DJ. I'm not a dance-club-hit maker. I get bored on stage when I'm just dancing and pushing buttons on midi controllers or gameboys or laptops or whatever. I'm moving on. I'm going to where I am celebrated for who I am and what I can do. I'm going to where I can feel satisfied with my creations and where people will enjoy my music the most. Like I've said before, “i'm just a rock'n'roll musician who found he could make electronic music… easily and quite well.”

TWG007| +LET'S DISINFECT!+ - S/T

Chiptune’s greatest and most prolific horrorpunkster ‘+Let’s Disinfect!+’ is gracing TWG with a self-titled album, three years in the making, and his usual bouts of anthemic chippunk.
Continuing our tradition of showcasing chiptune with experimental or ‘out of the ordinary’ applications, Sean Monistat, aka +Let’s Disinfect!+, produces his most diverse album yet. Whilst tracks like ‘My Life Hurts’ and the title track delve into that familiar upbeat +LD!+ sound, this debut full-length sees an expansion of Let’s Disinfect’s repertoire, drawing on post-punk sounds on ‘Melted Ice Cream’, prog metal meanderings in ‘A Garden of Mutants’ and nods to chipthrash in ‘Buy My Lawnmower!’. This all adds up to the most diverse Let’s Disinfect release to date.

As with most releases here on TWG, ‘+Let’s Disinfect!+’ is a grower, and repeat listens will let those punk pop-lined hooks dig only deeper into the brain, until every single lyric is engraved into natural impulse. And if the adhesive motifs weren't enough, the vibrancy of textures and styles coated with that trademark ‘less-is-more’ chip (in this case DS) programming and crowd-chanting shouts of frontman Sean leave this release in the stratosphere when comparing it to vocal/chip albums of the past. From the plodding determination of ‘Contact!’ to the ferocious outburst of the title track, Let’s Disinfect! continues to cement himself as an essential forward thinker within an often saturated scene, and an extremely talented one at that.

TWG006| Origami Repetika- Into The Ether

TWG is proud to present to you the newest work by Origami Repetika. Much like his previous efforts, ‘Into The Ether’ focuses on subtlety and melody. Esoteric phrases glide over each other whilst soft FM sounds coax ethereal atmospheres and throat-catching beauty every second. Instead of sticking to traditional song structures, ‘Into The Ether’ swoons from one euphoric high to another, forming a free flowing wash of genres, inspirations and experiences.
At its very core, this release embodies understated glory, and repeat listens will leave a more bombastic and lasting impression than the previous spin. From the melancholic serenity of ‘honeyknocker meadows’ to the quiet groove of ‘love your handy hands’, from the enveloping samples and elation of 'gaily into the ether' to the quiet grandiloquence of 'cure's climax, ‘Into The Ether’ is delicate, elusive and so incredibly at home on TWG. 12 minutes of ingenuity and bliss.

TWG005| boaconstructor & turtlesaur- Step Your Game Up

Bringing you two rising stars from Washington on one killer release, TWG is hugely proud to present ‘Step Your Game Up’ by boaconstructor and turtlesaur.
Despite being the label debut for Boa and turtlesaur’s first appearance here on TWG, both still brought their A-game. Featuring the first LSDJ work to be released on TWG, boaconstructor (Michael) and turtlesaur (Tanner) meld the history of chiptune into EDM anthems crafted especially for the dance floor and DJ booths. Featuring three versus tracks and a solo venture each, the pair ventures far into the realms of foot-moving mayhem.
Boa’s solo track, ‘Muzzle’, reeks of swagger in its house meanderings, whilst turtlesaur’s own ‘Pyramid Bouncer’ melds Chipzel-esque frantic melodies with cyberpunk beats. The split tracks, however, are in a league of their own. Mixing aggressive tones with the last 5 years of electronic music, the Washington duo have really re-set the bar for the range of sounds that can be spat from a Gameboy.
New York, Step Your Game Up.
