TWG006| Origami Repetika- Into The Ether

TWG is proud to present to you the newest work by Origami Repetika. Much like his previous efforts, ‘Into The Ether’ focuses on subtlety and melody. Esoteric phrases glide over each other whilst soft FM sounds coax ethereal atmospheres and throat-catching beauty every second. Instead of sticking to traditional song structures, ‘Into The Ether’ swoons from one euphoric high to another, forming a free flowing wash of genres, inspirations and experiences.
At its very core, this release embodies understated glory, and repeat listens will leave a more bombastic and lasting impression than the previous spin. From the melancholic serenity of ‘honeyknocker meadows’ to the quiet groove of ‘love your handy hands’, from the enveloping samples and elation of 'gaily into the ether' to the quiet grandiloquence of 'cure's climax, ‘Into The Ether’ is delicate, elusive and so incredibly at home on TWG. 12 minutes of ingenuity and bliss.

News| 01.08.2013

At a slight loss regarding what I should review this week, I’ve decided to bail instead. It’s a slow week anyway. So instead, here is a list of worthwhile releases that have been out in the last few weeks…

But first! Some important news regarding TWG: We have three new exclusive-to-TWG releases set to come out this month!

First we have ‘Into The Ether’ by warm analog manipulator Origami Repetika, bringing another small slice of gorgeous melodic tunes and stunningly subtle atmosphere. Out this weekend!

Secondly, we have ‘Imprints’ by experimental chiptster Guardia; 10 tracks, lusciously demanding melodies and enough hip hop swagger to fill a mixtape. For a taste of what’s to come, you can listen to an unmastered version of one of the tracks, ‘God Guard’, right here! Also, sneaky peeky at the artwork>>

Also this month we’ll be bringing you a release by Horrorpunk chiptune king Let’s Disinfect!. The release is self-titled, and if the already released track from it, ‘Contact!’ (which can be heard here) is anything to go by, expect the usual singable punk heavy chip anthems.
As well as these releases, we have PLENTY more in the pipeline, so keep tuned….

Elsewhere in chiptune:
Nonfinite released a fifteen minute dub/techno/chip-electro mix, entitiled ‘It Does Not Follow’. expect the usual level of insane quality and panache as you would do from a Nonfinite release.

In celebration of Frank Twisk’s, organiser of EINDBAAS, 30th birthday, Lunar Park (aka Monodeer), Men of Mega, xyce, Ultrasyd and RoccoW have teamed up to release a tribute called ‘The FrankTwisk Ep’. 5 original tracks and 5 remixes, if you haven’t checked it out already, jump on it! Happy Birthday man!

Ricky Burgal, recently released his debut release on Love & Tonic Records. ‘Assorted Women’ features wonky beats, swagger and bludgeoning groove. I highly recommend!

Also, if you haven’t already, check out the last two releases reviewed here, StormBlooper’sJawn-Dis’ and seatrash’s ‘Sedition’. The former is hyper cyberpunk unce, the former understated melodic genius.

And, finally, small plug, I recently repackaged all my previous releases and some B-Sides under a release called ‘past’ and put out some demos and WIPs of my upcoming full length under ‘present’.

So, until tomorrow’s WeeklyTreat, (which is being supplied by ELECTRIC CHILDREN), all the best, and if you're attending BRKfest this weekend, I hope my jealousy stings you. And have a good time of course x~

Review| Origami Repetika- Little Bumble

Every once in a while, whilst sifting through the expanses of the chiptune world, you find a gem that reaffirms your belief in the genre’s scope and power. ‘Little Bumble’ was one of those releases. Sent to me in a PM by a member of chipmusic.org under the name of SJSFC, I opened up the link and explored. I was met with a set of conflicting notions; it was hosted by FMA, a curated and often high quality host of varying musical styles. However, on the other hand, the artwork showed a badly drawn bumble bee. The release was a mere four tracks and a blurb stated it “might appeal to those with young children”, painting it to be a collection of low-quality and embarrassingly crude takes on chiptune.

Whatever my preconceptions might have been, what I found inside pleasantly shocked. The tones and atmospheres can only be described as elegant;  I’d only ever experienced tones so engrossing before in small snippets of ant1 and Zan-Zan-Zawa-Veia’s work, and the level of emotion pushed around these four short tracks rivalled that of peeR’s definitive release ‘Dances’. The EP follows a freeform progressive jazz flow, giving it a sound that wouldn’t be overly amiss appearing on Ubiktune. Countermelodies constantly shift and harmonies consistently strike an internal chord; in fact the melodies are sometimes touchingly beautiful.

Some of background glissandos in ‘4c iced tea’ are truly stunning, the end section of ‘tuffet’ makes inspiringly subtle use of droning pads, soft triangle bass and piano, whilst the harmonies and horns in ‘mighty lilbumble bee’ are remarkable. Almost inaudible sample work in the background gives the release a thick layering and the constant shift of thematic attention gives it huge breadth. Whilst not every note ‘strikes’ with you, for instance the opening 20 seconds of ‘tuffet’ are so dissonant it breaks the album’s pace slightly, on the whole every second sounds precise and purposeful.

If you were to follow FMA’s advice and give this to small children, the complexity within would be completely lost on them, however, the gorgeous tones and warm square sounds would undoubtedly find a willing audience. And that, in a crux, is the genius of this release; complexity without sacrificing emotion. If you’re disillusioned with the quality of most chipmusic output today, this will surely reignite your passion. A must download.
